PLASTER HANDS
7th/8th Grade

Working in groups of two, students covered 1/2 of their partner's hand working in plaster gauze. The next day the second partner completed the first partner's hand. The third day they stuffed their own hand with newspaper, shaped the missing side, and plastered the remaining parts. A 2" cuff was added to allow the hand to stand as a sculpture on it own.

Thumbnail sketches were drawn to allow for conceptual thinking processes until the student had decided on his/her own direction for their hand and also maintain a 3-dimentional quality while looking interesting from all sides. Items were brought in from home to add to their sculpture.

Even though each student used the same basic form of the hand, it was exciting to see the creativity and uniqueness of each individual sculpture.
